Try a Tri

And I did just that.

Actually I did better than just trying a Triathlon.  I did pretty good.

June 9th, I swam, biked and ran a Sprint Triathlon in Clermont.  A Sprint Triathlon includes a 1/4 mile swim, a 10 mile bike, and a 3.1 mile run.

There were over 350 participants ranging from 11 to 74.

There I am, black and pink, center with a lavender swim cap on.  Lavender was the color for the Novice group.  I thought it appropriate to change my category to Novice after hearing that most of the women in my age group take it pretty seriously.

There I am chatting it up with my fellow Novice-ers in the most unflattering pose I am capable of.

382 was my number.  It was pretty close to 'representin' the hood.  Would rather have had 352.  You know me and numbers.  That's me with my ankle chip timer also.  Coolest thing ever invented for racing, in my opinion.

All of the other racers have taken off, we're the last wave, my adrenaline is starting to flow, I'm stretching, and I've managed to squeak out the 2nd most unflattering pose I am capable of.

Off we go.

I'm not sure if the 1/4 mile is measured from where the actual water starts or the depth of water where it's deep enough to swim in.  There was quite a bit of running in the water before the swimming could begin.

I did a pretty good job preparing for this.  Mentally, physically, equipment needed, etc.  The one area I was not prepared for, and couldn't have been unless I had a mentor, was pacing myself in the swimming.  I busted out of there like a bull out of the chute-gate and it didn't take long into my swimming until I felt 'winded.'  But, thankfully they don't count you off for strange strokes.

About here was where I felt the need to incorporate the Elementary Backstroke, which I'm sure looked ridiculous to anybody who actually does these regularly, but it gave me a chance to catch my breath and still move in the right direction.

Yes, there's a reason you don't see any of us sprinting out of the water.  We're EXHAUSTED already!

About this time I was soooo glad to be done swimming, then I look up and see nothing but sugar sand, uphill, for 23 miles.  Well maybe not quite 23.  It might as well have been.

What I was blissfully unaware of also, was that the transitions were being timed and ranked also.  You see, I kind of treated my transition as my rest time.  I used the opportunity to chat it up with my fellow Novice-ers, take a breather and yes, take my time.  Oh well, I managed to transition from swimming to biking successfully.

So, off I go on my 10 mile bike.  It started out great, some slight weaving in and out of the local neighborhood, chatting it up with the Policemen directing the traffic, and somehow I ended up alone.  There was about an 8-mile stretch where there was no one in front of me and no one behind me.  It was a beautiful scenic ride around the lake and I found myself sightseeing more than I was concentrating on the race.  I noticed the beautiful homes, their landscaping, their driveways, the views and lake access in their backyards, nice boats parked in their driveways and lawn care crews beautifying.  I'm not exactly sure when I snapped out of it, but sometime I realized I should be racing rather than sightseeing.

It was also this time when I passed a young lady that obviously didn't know how to operate her gears.  Her little legs were spinning as fast as they could and she was barely moving.  But I wasn't a nice enough person to actually slow down to help her.  Bad, Kelle, bad.  I was passed soon after by a 70-year-old man with Incredible Hulk legs.  Now mind you, when riding a bicycle, quads and hamstrings are kicked into overdrive anyway, but this man's legs were ENORMOUS and he was covered in gray hair and wrinkles!

The last couple of miles were the hardest because of the hills.  But, for every uphill there was a downhill.  So it worked out and I only had to walk my bike the last 100 feet on one of the hills.  The lady in front of me actually fell off her bike and when I turned around to ask her if she was okay, I lost my balance also.  It was a calculated fall with no injuries and a quick mount, but I had lost my momentum so it was just easier to walk the rest of the way.  Good news was for the entire bike ride I passed 4 people and Mr. Incredible Hulk legs was the only one to pass me.

Here I am returning from the bike ride and thinking, "Seriously?  Now I have 3.1 miles to run?  I HATE running! AHHHHHHHHH!

Not the most flattering face I've had in a picture, but the real deal.  I must document accurately.

Ok, so let's get this party started!  Last leg.  Ha, what a great pun!

I'm still managing some good spirits.  Must be the delirium has set in.

Since running is my weakest area, I consider passing 3 people during the run a huge success and only walked about half a mile total.

I finished it.  Alive.  In one piece.  Without a heart attack and only a moderately pink face.  One of the things I've completed in my life that I am very proud of.

Some interesting statistics (thanks to the FABULOUS ankle timing chips):
I placed first out of all the novice-ers.

Out of 104 total women, I finished in 93rd place.
My swim time was 52nd place. [5:44]
My first transition time was 99th place. [4:40]
My biking time was 90th place. [47:14 = 4.7-minute mile]
My second transition time was 97th place. [3:05]
My run time was 96th place. [39:35 = 12.45-minute mile]
My cumulative time was 1hr 40min 16sec.

What I noticed after obsessing over the numbers was if I actually tried to transition fast, I could have cut off a couple of minutes which would have, in this race, moved me up 3 places.

I'd love to do another one, but I'd like someone to do it with me, keep me focused you know?  The next 2 are August 11th and September 8th in Clermont.  I'm not kidding.

Wanna race?

Fuzzy Wuzzy

Have I mentioned before how much I love this kid's fuzzy hair?

I know, I know, I'm supposed to be nice to my children because they will eventually choose my nursing home, but come on!!!!!  If this hair were edible, I'd be 20 pounds heavier.

I even tell the barber to not take that much off the top because I love it so much.

When I put the 3 kids in the space ship shopping cart at Publix today, Brandon's hair was constantly tickling his flanking siblings.  One enjoyed it and the other complained a lot.  You figure it out.

Typical school morning

During school time, the ride there and back usually proved to be too much for little man.  It was the perfect time to catch up on his morning nap.  And considering he was up since about 5:30, it was appropriate.

This dude decided to take advantage of his mother's love of the camera and ham it up.  Behold, Nathan's funny faces.

Beautiful Ballerina

Our little beautiful ballerina had her weekend-long recital on Mother's Day weekend, and I couldn't have been a prouder mama that weekend.

It was a very hectic weekend, but one that gave me some valuable one-on-one time with my little girl who can't seem to stop growing up.  A big thank you shout out to the in-laws for helping keep our family intact that weekend and provide the opportunity to celebrate Mother's Day.

On the way to the dress rehearsal, Katherine said from the back seat, "Mom, I have something important to tell you."  My heart kind of sank and I said cautiously, "What's that SweetPea?"  She said slowly, "I really. Like. Being. On the stage."

:)

Shy shmy.

We chose to send her to a different dance company this year and boy was I pleased with the change.  It's the one we've been going to for years that offers the free ballets in the Spring and Christmas time.

This particular performance was based on the story of Esther.  I don't know about you, but (I'm about to tell on myself) historical stories just don't stay planted in my brain when I read them.  Including biblical stories.  (My reading comprehension has always been a little on the 'low' side, guess that's it).  So when I get to see a story acted out and actually have a piece of my heart up there on that stage performing God's word, the guts of the story and meaning tend to stick with me a lot longer than if I would have read it.  Know what I mean?  I'm so thankful for the opportunity to witness God's word through different mediums.  It truly helps.

Katherine was chosen to lead the girls out onto the stage for their part by doing cartwheels.  Our house was the CFCTF, Central Florida Cartwheel Training Facility since the beginning of the year.  All in the name of performing God's word, right?

Her class's part was called the Persian gift-bearers.  They were responsible for bringing gifts to the beautiful Queen Esther.

It was cute.  Very cute.

Some of her fans came by to see her perform.

The Ballet A class taught by Mrs. L and Miss E.  These two ladies provided spectacular, Godly and know-their-stuff leadership.  Of which I am soooo thankful.

Nathan's Sunday School teacher's daughter.  And a frequent babysitter we use.  I just love the intertwining of our little community with church and extra-curricular activities.

Brandon's first birthday

I'm still only 2 months behind in blogging, so here goes writing about Brandon's birthday that was back in May...

As much as I hate to admit it, having 3 children does make you choose the 'easier' option many times. When the world revolved around the one and only child, it was a piece of cake to drop everything, plan a birthday party for months, make handmade invitations, invite the closest 100 family members and throw a jamming first birthday party the child will never remember.  I knew in my heart it was all for me, but I didn't care.  My world did revolve around that first child and celebrating her first birthday was top priority.

Enter in 2 children later and, dare I say, maybe, I'm wiser?  Or maybe I'm just more tired and worn down.  There really is very little time to plan, prepare and decorate.  Oh yeah, and don't forget, less money. :)

Nevertheless, this child is loved and adored just as much.  I must work through Mommy guilt issues when I come to the realization that no matter how much we try not to, we do treat each child differently.

So enough of the serious-shmerious talk.  This dude is rocking.  During these pictures, he hadn't quite started walking yet, but he is now (and now is July).  He is EVERYWHERE.  He doesn't stop.  He's just so happy to be up and mobile, he goes anywhere and everywhere his little chubby legs will take him.

The toilet is a favorite place of his.  We do our best to keep the bathroom doors closed, but occasionally, we miss it and he goes fishing.  Empty, full, doesn't matter.

He enjoys wrestling with his brother.  Every now and then, I'll find Nathan carefully wrestling with his little brother on the carpet, and Brandon is in heaven.

He's showing sure-tell signs of being a rough and tough boy.  There's hardly a time when his little forehead doesn't have a bruise or scratch on it.  He growls often.  When he's hurt, only me or Katherine will do, but playtime is mostly reserved for brother or Daddy.

Here in July, he has started signing 'I love you' and 'milk.'  He's saying Na Na for Nathan and Dis for Sissy and talking in a high pitched voice when George the cat comes around.

He's much busier in restaurants now and has successfully sworn me off of nice restaurants with him for another 2-3 months or so.  Olive Garden has our family's mugshot at the waitress station to warn of another impending visit.

He will eat pretty much anything you put in front of him, thankfully.  I've had practice with another boy, so I'm better about feeding him more often during the day.  Seems to help with his attitude a bit.

He's very clingy now when I try to drop him off in the nursery.  Thankfully I've done this 2 other times so it doesn't make me tear up as much.  I've figured out to stand outside of view and just listen.  He does just fine within 2-3 minutes and I peacefully walk away.

He is a jolly little fella.  His infant 'theme song' was:

I'm in-right, out-right, up-right, down-right, happy all the time.
I'm in-right, out-right, up-right, down-right, happy all the time.
Since Jesus Christ came in, and took away my sin.
I'm in-right, out-right, up-right, down-right, happy all the time.

It still is.  He's a laid-back, easy-going guy.

He is a wonderful addition to our little family.  Just can't imagine life with him.

Lawn Lovelies

They're eating the atrocious lollipops we thought were a good idea to buy at Hollywood Studios.  Those things were huge, hard, extra sticky and seemed to grow overnight.  They'd eat a little bit, we'd save it on some wax paper, and in the morning they were bigger.  At least I think they were.
